Cycling enthusiasts will find the perfect destination for a cycling trip here
It is one of the most beautiful cycling areas in France and it is perfect for cyclists who appreciate nature, peace and quiet.
Although these are not high mountains in the Cévennes, the differences in altitude can be considerable. The mountains, valleys and picturesque villages mark the varied character of the Cévennes. There are plenty of quiet cycle paths with good road surfaces; from gentle climbs to flat, spicy cols of about 1000 metres altitude.
Crossing the Cévennes by bike
The sporty cyclist can have fun in the Cévennes with many miles of great cycle routes. The region seems to be made for the cyclist: many small roads, so the possibilities to make beautiful excursions are very varied and you never have to cover the same route. In addition, the roads are not much frequented by cars, even in high season.
Cycling in the mountains
The highest mountains in the Cévennes are Mont Lozère and Mont Aigoual (1702 m and 1567 m), which are part of the Massif Central.
The Mont Bouquet, with its 630 meters, is an impressive challenge with one of the most difficult climbs (> 5km, between 16% and 26%). Highly recommended for cyclists who want to be proud of themselves; you will be rewarded with a beautiful view, on a clear day, all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.
Mont Aigoual by bike
The Cévennes have their own Mont-Ventoux: Mont-Aigoual.
You need to have good legs, an adapted bike and be in good condition. The climbs show a wide variety of cycle tracks.
Everything you need to plan your cycling routes
At Le Miracle there is a map with more than 15 described cycle routes. There are also guidelines that allow you to compose your own bike tours in this part of France.
To make it even easier to plan beautiful cycling trips in the surrounding area, we have laid out a number of cycle routes (as a GPX file). They are easy to follow with an application on your smartphone and there’s no danger of getting lost.
Cross the Lozère, the Ardèche and the Gard by bike
Le Miracle is located at the intersection of three distinct areas with very different character and landscape. This makes it an excellent base for beautiful bike tours through the varied landscapes of the south of France.
Cyclists will find plateaus (Causses) and vast valleys in the Lozère. On the plateaus, the route is a somewhat flatter, but there is often a vicious wind, which makes cycling challenging.
The Ardèche is “just around the corner”, so a bike tour in this beautiful region is nearby.
In the Gard, the cyclist will find a more sloping landscape covered with garrigue. Because of the low vegetation, shade is a rare thing in summer.
There are plenty of mountain bike trails in the area; right at the doorstep of Le Miracle you will find many forest trails ahead of you.
